Demystifying Contracts

A deal’s a deal.  Or is it?  We enter and perform contracts every day without thinking twice about them (or even thinking about them at all).  When you’re purchasing something online, subscribing to a streaming service, opening a bank account, getting a credit card, getting a haircut, renting an apartment, accepting a job, etc., you are entering into a contract. 

In the Arts and Entertainment industry, contracts are everything.  Contracts define rights and responsibilities.  Contracts define who owns what and who gets paid how much.  

But other than lawyers, who really enjoys reading contracts?  Nobody, right? 

But when your creation and livelihood are on the line, what do you do?

Sure, you can (and in many cases should) hire a lawyer to read and interpret a contract for you, but ultimately it is you, not your lawyer, that is affected by the contract. That means that despite how incredibly dull contracts can often be, you need to understand what it is you are obligating yourself to.
