Busy? Want to take on more clients but don’t have the time? Hate doing research or writing briefs? Want to spend more time with clients, in negotiations or in the courtroom? Let me help.
Why Outsource Your Legal Research and Writing?
Outsourcing Allows You To Focus on What You Do Best and Provide the Best Service for Your Client
Would you rather be in the court room or a deposition than sitting at your computer? Do you love working with clients, negotiating with opposing counsel, or creating winning legal strategies? Maybe you are really good at crafting settlements, but not as good with adversarial pleadings.
Focus on your strengths. If you’re not strong in research and writing, you don’t have time to do an effective job, or you just plain don’t like doing it, you can provide the most efficient and effective service to your clients by doing what you do best and outsourcing the research and writing to someone who can do skilled, effective work.
Make Effective Use of Your Time
A law practice is a business. In addition to the “lawyering” of appearing in court, advising clients, communicating with other attorneys, negotiating with stakeholders, etc., you have to manage office staff, monitor expenses, attract clients, and do other non-billable tasks that can eat up your day. Having an experienced attorney who can relieve you, in large extent, of the time-consuming task of research and writing frees you to concentrate on other areas of your practice.
Reduce Costs and Increase Profitability
There is a significant cost to staffing your law practice with employees, including associates – office space, increased malpractice premiums, taxes, benefits, etc. There is also the increased cost in time of managing the office. By outsourcing you can avoid or reduce many of these costs.
Another advantage of not hiring an associate to do the work is that you have no long term commitment, and don’t have to endure the drama and possible liability of terminating an associate who doesn’t meet your needs or expectations.
In addition to the reduced costs, outsourcing can actually increase your profitability. Most state Bar Associations allow an attorney to charge the client more than they pay for the outsourced work, so long as the total charge for the work is reasonable. Just be sure to confirm that this is allowed in the jurisdiction in which you’re practicing.
Outsourcing Brings Flexibility To Your Practice
Even if you have associates who could do your research and writing, or even have some time to do it yourself, a contract attorney gives you flexibility. You or your associates may not be well-versed in the particular area of law involved, there may be competing deadlines, or you may want to free up some time to take on other work. A contract attorney who is already well-versed in the area or who has the time to research the required subject area gives you options for more effectively handling your cases.
You have the flexibility of deciding what and how much to outsource. Maybe you outsource an individual pleading or brief. Maybe you outsource all writing requirements for a particular case, or just the research. Maybe you are great with the case in chief, but don’t like to do the briefing on appeal. You choose what you outsource and what you keep entirely in-house.
Get a Different Perspective
No matter how experienced you are as an attorney it can be incredibly helpful to have a new perspective. Maybe another set of eyes will see something you missed, identify other issues or arguments, or provide a “devil’s advocate” to help assess strengths and weaknesses of your case. Even if you have other attorneys in your office who could take on this role, sometimes even they are too close to the situation. In addition, the contract attorney may have more experience with the specific subject area than you do or have access to resources you do not.
Take a Load Off
You know how stressful and time consuming a law practice can be. Members of the legal profession are at high risk for burnout and substance abuse. There is more to life than work. Outsourcing allows you to take some of the pressure off you to do everything, maintain more healthy, manageable work hours, and spend more time enjoying the life you have worked so hard to support.
